Today, fortunately or unfortunately with 24hr connectivity we don’t need to look far to find something that through cause or reasons unknown to many of us, our industry becomes involved or affected by the horrible events such as those which have recently so sadly occurred in both Paris and Kenya. This has been a very sombre reminder of in fact how lucky we can be living in a country such as Korea. Of course our thoughts and prayers have and will continue to be with all of those who have been affected by such terrible callous attacks and indirectly the many travel and tourism related businesses which are now feeling the full brunt of these events.

Looking back over what is now almost 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry there are very few years where in one form or another our industry has been plunged into chaos by these type of events. This year as well has seen unique challenges and highlights why we must all work diligently and collectively in ensuring we minimize the risk of it ever happening closer to home. That said, our region has certainly had its fair share of natural disasters or health scares all of which we have rebounded from but thankfully up to now not been directly affected by these acts of violence, which brings me back to technology.

I recently travelled back into Korea on a Sunday afternoon and at the time was certainly not impressed with the line-up or wait which I encountered clearing immigration. I feel we are on the cusp of a major shift and change in how all travellers are screened and monitored when travelling in all parts of the world. I don’t know of many countries that are not talking up the targeted increase in visitors to their shores including the Korea’s target of 17,000,000 visitors by the end of 2018. This is where technology can make up for many of the negative events which we are exposed to so easily.

With the increase in travel the consequent increase in the length of the line at immigration, for the time being I only need to think of the very complicated and difficult job that all immigration departments face and remind myself how fortunate we have been to have not been affected by such horrible events.

Paris too, like other cities affected by these types of events, will rebound and return to its place as one of the major tourist destinations of the world, however unfortunately these events will certainly change the way we experience Paris as tourist. And to Paris we say, “Strand strong and we wish you a quick recovery to your beautiful self.”
