The recent violent acts around the world have given us all cause for concern. With the bombing of a Russian airplane in Egypt, the killings in Paris, and the attacks in San Bernardino we may all have an uneasy feeling about traveling. Nevertheless, given the fact that millions of people travel annually, traveling has remained relatively safe.

Having said that, it is important that one not take any unnecessary risks while traveling. I suggest that this advice is especially true for those of us living in Korea. While living in Korea a country of relatively low crime particularly because of the lack of guns, one tends to lower their guard when it comes to possible crime. This is the same for the international community living here as well as the Koreans. I often refer to Korea as a kind of “Disney Land” when comparing the lack of crime here to that of major cities in the U.S. and Europe. I am often saddened when my Korean friends return from a vacation to a place like Europe and I ask them, “Did you have any problems?” Often times the answer is, “How did you know”. They then go on to explain how their camera or purse was stolen or a similar incident.

While we can not avoid traveling nor do we want to, there are some tips that we can follow to reduce our risk of problems when traveling abroad. Although these tips are not exhaustive, they are particularly important for the novice traveler. 

Here are my tips:
1. Research your destination thoroughly before your trip. This way you know the best places to see but also you can know the safe neighborhoods and those not so safe. Also, always pay attention to your surroundings. 
2. Do not bring valuables with you for example, expensive jewelry. You should have a bag into which you keep your important things like passport, camera, and credit cards and keep it with you at all times.
3. When you are traveling in the city only take enough cash for the day. Leave the rest of your cash and valuables in the hotel safe. Avoid showing large amounts of cash in public.
4. Try to dress like the local people. The more you stand out the more you look like a tourist and are vulnerable to criminals.
5. Do not drink too much alcohol. When you drink, you dull your senses and reactions which could make you vulnerable to criminals.
6. Do not trust strangers too quickly. Some criminals befriend travelers and then take their valuables when they least expect it. 
7. Spend the extra money to take a taxi home at night if you do not feel comfortable walking through certain neighborhoods at night or alone. Also, do not take rides from strangers.
8. If you are robbed, do not resist. Also, keep some extra cash hidden in a separate spot for emergencies.
If you follow these tips you can prevent your traveling being ruined by problems. Happy travels!

최근 세계 곳곳에서 일어나고 있는 폭력적인 행위들은 걱정과 우려를 초래하기 마련이다. 이집트에서 일어난 러시아 국적 항공 폭탄 테러, 파리 테러, 샌 버너디노 총기사건 등은 특히 여행에 대해 불안감을 불러일으킨다. 그럼에도 불구하고 한 가지 사실을 알려주자면 매년 수백만명의 사람들이 비교적 안전하게 여행을 하고 있다는 것이다. 

특히 한국은 총기 소지자가 적기 때문에 다른 나라에 비해 상대적으로 범죄율이 낮은 편이라고 생각한다. 유럽이나 미국으로 여행을 다녀온 한국인 친구에게 “아무 문제없었니?”라고 물으면 그들은 어떻게 문제가 있었다는 걸 알았냐는 반응이다. 그리고는 카메라와 지갑을 어떻게 도난당했는지에 대해 설명을 시작한다. 

여기 해외여행시 발생하는 문제를 줄이기 위해 따를 수 있는 몇 가지 팁이 있다. 물론 이것이 완벽하게 안전한 여행을 위한 팁은 아니지만 초보 여행자에게는 매우 중요할 것이다. 

 

1. 여행 전 목적지에 대해 철저히 탐구하라. 가장 좋은 여행지를 찾는 것은 물론 그 지역이 안전한지에 대해 파악할 수 있는 방법이다. 
2. 값비싼 물건을 가져가지 말 것. 여권, 카메라, 신용카드 등 중요한 물건은 항상 가방 안에 소지하고 다녀야 한다.
3. 도시를 여행할 때에는 하루에 필요한 현금을 넉넉히 챙기자. 나머지 현금과 귀중품은 호텔에 보관하라. 큰 금액의 현금은 공공장소에서 타인에게 보이지 말 것. 
4. 옷차림은 현지인처럼 갖추자. 현지인에 비해 튀는 옷차림일수록 여행자라는 것을 드러내는 행위다. 범죄 대상이 되기 쉽다. 
5. 과음은 금물이다. 술을 마시면 감정과 행동이 흐려지는데 이 또한 범죄 대상이 되기 쉽다.
6. 타인을 쉽게 믿지 말 것. 일부 범죄자들은 여행자들에게 친근하게 다가와 비싼 물건을 훔쳐가기도 한다.
7. 늦은 밤 혼자 걷기 두렵거나 불안할 때는 택시를 타라.
