샐러드를 먹을 때는 dressing(야채에 치는 소스)을 친다. 미국식당에 가서 steak(스테이크)를 시키면 꼭 What kind of dressing would you like?(어떤 드레싱을 원하느냐?)고 묻는다. 또 빵을 달라고 하면 대개 Would you like white or wheat bread?(빵은 흰빵으로 드릴까요, 갈색빵으로 드릴까요?)라고 묻는다. 빵은 다 wheat(밀)로 만들지만, 빵봉지에 white라고 쓴 것은 보통의 흰빵이고 wheat라고 쓴 것은 원래 밀색깔 그대로의 갈색빵을 뜻한다(갈색빵이 더 영양가가 높다).
